Introduce an experimental auto-detect carrier based on tracking number

Would love to do this. If we only supported a handful of providers it would be easy! Unfortunately, since we support so many providers it makes it more difficult.. I doubt we could ever get it correct 100% of the time - but it is worth an experimental feature.

I like this.

The two letters of each trackid is the code of a country, should be that difficult to write a software code for that?
The two letters are a great help to get the originating country, yes - for EMS parcels. The EMS parcels (the ones with the letters on the end) are only about half of the providers that we support though. But still, it could be a good idea to start with auto-detecting the carrier for EMS parcels.
sorry my english
this feature will be awesome.
rigth now when you mistake the carrier it dont tell you but only puts ??? (you dont know if there is not any information or mistaken carrier.
i use also a webapp of packagetrackr and it automatically detects carrier
If the main issue is too many carriers, then you might be able to use the favorite carrier list to prioritize them.  For example, check for a match from one of the favorites first, then continue to the rest of them if it wasn't found.

However, even if it's not 100%, suggesting a carrier based on the tracking number would be a great help.

Searching only the favorites list would make things a lot easier and limit searching.

There must be an easy way to do this though since Google and sites like http://www.packagetrackr.com can figure out the carrier by the tracking number.   I know certain carriers have specific tracking number lengths.
You could probably get rid of half your carriers based on usage.  Without carrier autodetection this application loses out to TrackThePack.  Having a ton of carriers is cool but the majority of people probably use less than 25.

It doesn't have to detect the exact carrier. Instead, it could show a short list of which carriers are applicable given the tracking number length, which would usually be only 1 or 2. Then have all the rest listed underneath as a fail-safe for incorrect carrier detection. Top to bottom "Add a package" could read: Description, tracking number, most appropriate carriers, all carriers.

In reply to Max K's most recent comment:

Absolutely agree!
That would be the ideal process.

(Unfortunately, the Reply and Thumbs-Up buttons aren't working at the moment.)

You mean just like Parcel App? :P

Parcel App's answer to the problem of auto-detecting from so many carriers is alright actually. They give a short-list of carriers that might match. I actually like this better than PackageTrackr.com, which seems to pick one of them (always incorrectly for me) in the event of multiple possibilities.

I presume the developers get access to all the tracking numbers we use? (or can we add an option to allow this?) to let you work out the formats used for each.

The "Add Delivery" interface would need to change to let you enter the tracking ID first, so that the list of carriers can be shrunk to only those that could work.

I use this one good package tracker tracking number , work without mistake, DHL, fedex, UPS, tnt... Just enter the track number on your site and you will receive accurate information where he is currently...
